Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
With God’s help, we are approaching the holy and saving season of Great Lent—a time that the Church gives us as an opportunity to pause, to gather ourselves, and to rediscover the true direction of our lives.
Fasting is not only abstaining from certain foods. Above all, it is a call to spiritual awakening—a call to examine our thoughts, our words, our habits, and our priorities. It invites us to ask ourselves: What truly matters in my life? Where is my heart? Whom do I serve—God or the passing worries and distractions of this world?
For this reason, I warmly and pastorally encourage you to approach the fast seriously, but also with wisdom, peace, and discernment. Each of us lives in different life circumstances, health conditions, and responsibilities. Therefore, please feel free to reach out to me so that together we may determine a way of fasting that will be spiritually beneficial and not a burden. Fasting is not a competition, but a journey of returning to God.
Great Lent is also a time of repentance and reconciliation with the Lord through the Holy Mystery of Confession. The Lord calls us:
“Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17).
You are welcome to call me and arrange a time for confession on any day that is convenient for you, and especially on Fridays after the Akathist service.
I kindly ask that you make an effort to avoid coming for confession immediately before the Divine Liturgy. Confession is not something to be done quickly or casually. It is not a “drive-through” event, but a sacred encounter with God that requires time, quiet, prayer, and preparation. In the words of the Psalmist:
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart—these, O God, You will not despise.” (Psalm 50 [51])
This holy season is also an invitation to attend the services more frequently. In the church, through prayer, the reading of Scripture, and common worship, we receive the strength to persevere. Fasting without prayer and participation in the services can easily become only a diet, but fasting within the life of the Church becomes a path of transformation.
May this Lenten journey be for us a time of silence, forgiveness, good deeds, deeper prayer, and greater love. If we fall—let us rise. If we grow weak—let us come to the church. If we drift away—let us return.
The goal of the fast is not perfection, but the change of the heart.
I pray that at the end of this spiritual journey, each of us may come forth more peaceful, more humble, closer to God, and closer to one another.
With love and prayers,
your priest,
Fr. Milorad Delic
