The Golden Age Club has been a vital part of the Gračanica Church community for decades. In the mid 1990’s, we had a very active and vibrant Pensioners’ Club, later known as the Golden Age Club. This was the brainchild of +Milorad Gačeša, together with +Milan Jovetic, +Milka Jovanov, +Milan Keca and many others. At that time, the club boasted a membership of over 50 people, and traveled by bus a few times a year to visit other Serbian Churches and attend events throughout Ontario and nearby US cities.
The Golden Age Club was the first Gračanica Organization to host a regular luncheon after Liturgy one Sunday a month. One or two families would commit to a month at the beginning of the year and they would prepare and pay for the meal for one Sunday.
Over the years, members have benefitted from the many activities the Club has supported, while at the same time continuing to contribute to other Church organizations. However, as with so many other things, the pandemic put pause to its activities.
On Wednesday, May 25, 2023, a meeting to revive the Golden Age Club was held in the lower level of Gračanica Church. Moving forward, the Golden Age Club will provide seniors from our community an opportunity to meet, organize and participate in social and cultural events.
In our kick off event, on Sunday, September 24, the Golden Age Club held a BBQ at the Serbian Centre. Over 50 members and supporters gathered to enjoy ćevapi, ražnići, salads, and desserts. Thanks to the contributions of our club and community volunteers and sponsors, we all had a lovely afternoon of delicious food and even better company.
