Special Visitor to Gracancia in Support Orthodox-Catholic Relations

Dr. John Cappucci, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Assumption University, Windsor’s Roman Catholic University, visited Gracanica on January 18, 2024 in honour of Christian Unity Week. Fr. Vladmir Vranic warmly welcomed Dr. Cappucci and provided an informative tour of our church. Dr. Cappucci was particularly impressed with the excellent condition of the artwork in the church – a testament to the support the church receives from the Serbian community. He was fascinated with the Dormition of the Theotokos paintings that adorns our choir loft. Since both Assumption University and the Gracancia are named after this miraculous event, the painting resonated with him. It is also a point that unifies both Orthodox and Catholic Christians. Fr. Vladmir also explained the Presentation of the Theotokos in the Temple painting – another point of similarity between the two branches of Christianity. At the end of the tour, Fr. Vladmir presented Dr. Cappucci with two Icons and a book on the history of Serbian Orthodoxy. Dr. Cappucci was touched by the gifts and will be a regular visitor at our events. Tracing its origins to 1857, Assumption University is one of the oldest Roman Catholic institutes of learning in Canada. Since 1870, it has been under the auspices of the Congregation of St. Basil or the Basilian Fathers. Assumption also offers a Graduate Diploma in Catholic Studies that is seen as a hiring asset by eight Catholic school boards. More information about Assumption University can be found at or
